Call for expressions of interest Marie Sklodowksa-Curie individual fellowships (Computational Social Sciences)

Are you a researcher interested in carrying out your research at the Chair of Computational Mathematics of DeustoTech/Deusto Foundation?

Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) Individual Fellowships provide salary and research support to postdoctoral researchers. The scheme is designed to help the most talented and promising researchers further develop their careers and diversify their experience, through advanced training and international mobility.

MSCA Fellowships are open to European and non-European researchers. Please note that according to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule, the applicant must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in Spain:

• for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline (September 2018) for MSCA-IF-EF-ST Standard European Fellowships and MSCA-IF-GF Global Fellowships;
• for more than 12 months in the 5 years immediately before the call deadline for MSCA-IF-EF-CAR Career Restart panel, MSCA-IF-EF-RI Reintegration panel and MSCA-IF-EF-SE Society and Enterprise panel.

In line with the University’s strategy to promote excellence, the International Research Project Office (IRPO) opens a call for receiving Expressions of Interest for MSCA Individual Fellowships.

Our aim is to attract and support applications of the best candidates that decide to choose UDEUSTO/FDEUSTO as host institution. Applications should be sent to IRPO through the email, with the subject MSCA-IF and the research topic (see documents below) before 04 June 2018. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in a training session on 18 June 2018 in Bilbao. Accommodation and training course expenses will be covered by the University. Travel expenses are at the responsibility of the participant.

Deusto Foundation as Host Institution

Established by the University of Deusto with a focus in applied and action research, Deusto Foundation acts as a link between basic research and academia, and society at large. Its two prestigious research centres, the Basque Institute of Competitiveness – Orkestra, and DeustoTech, have a long trajectory of collaboration with public and private companies, government agencies, industry and SMEs and other stakeholders.

DeustoTech is a research intensive centre closely linked to the Faculty of Engineering in the campus of Bilbao. Its cutting-edge research is recognised worldwide in areas such as Knowledge Mining, Context Aware ICT, Media and Human Technologies, and Communication and Embedded Systems amongst others. DeustoTech researchers benefit from over 2,000 m2 of newly renovated multimillion state-of-the-art facilities. The centre currently has 16 ongoing projects, including several international consortia projects and a prestigious ERC advanced grant. To date it has attracted substantial external funding and has concluded over 400 projects since its inception.

Orkestra, located at the University’s San Sebastian campus, has become an international model in the analysis of regional competitiveness in a global environment. Its main framework is the study of competitiveness and regional development to contribute to the improvement of regional competitiveness, with a solid expertise in Smart Specialisation Strategies (RIS3). Acting as an agent of change, Orkestra boosts socio-economic impact through an innovative participatory methodology that promotes multi-sectoral stakeholder engagement.

Research Team

The Chair of Computational Mathematics of DeustoTech, University of Deusto (Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain), aims to develop an active research, training and outreach agenda in the broad field of Applied Mathematics. Led by Enrique Zuazua, and funded, among other agencies, by the Advanced Grant DyCon of the European Research Council (ERC), the Chair is committed with the development of ground-breaking research in the areas of Partial Differential Equations, Control Theory, Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing; key tools for technological transfer and for the interaction of Mathematics with other scientific disciplines such as Biology, Social Sciences, Engineering, Earth and Climate Sciences.

The develops its activity in the DeustoTech research and technological center, oriented to computer, data and mathematical sciences, with excellent infrastructure and embedded in an international network of academic and research institutions.

The Chair aims to integrate a postdoctoral fellow to carry out mathematical and computational research in the field of“Computational Social Sciences”.

Modern societies are increasingly complex. Social networks and information technologies provide new opportunities of communication, cooperation and growth, but also raise new risks on security and the propagation of fake news. Immigration and refugees due to violence and poverty is another major issue, while multiculturalism and economic inequalities constitute significant challenges that need to be addressed to assure a stable long term sustainability.

Applicant’s Profile

We aim to employ the classical paradigm of Mathematical “modelling + analysis+ simulation +control “ to address these important issues.

Different problems inspired on social sciences require of a diversity of models including reaction-diffusion Partial Differential Equations (PDED), Markov chains, game theory and networks. On the other hand, the limited information and understanding we have of some of these new social emerging phenomena require of the construction of new methods based on the data at our disposal.

The goal of the postdoctoral research to be conducted would be to combine the classical tools of applied mathematics with the modern methodologies of data analytics and sciences to address these challenging issues.
